Need a big body from somewhere for christ’s sake. Our bigs and team as a whole are one of the worst screening teams in the P5. Maybe in the country. Slip screens are slip screens but any off ball movement where guys are trying shake free or curl around a screen or double screens and it’s not pretty. Rarely any contact or obstruction is ever created so the play is basically useless as we take a contested shot or can’t get a clean look. Same thing back when Cooney played. All these lanky bigs do not help with this issue and if they are able to actually set a potential good screen they often can’t hold their position since they are pretty weak in the lower body. Sometimes it even tricks a ref into a moving screen call against us since it’s such a debacle of a play. The only thing that sometimes works is one of the few set plays we run. Probably because it is easy to execute and defenses fall asleep occasionally on it. Where the inbounder in a corner screens for a shooter like Buddy in the same corner.
Forth and McNeil were very good at this stuff. Hell, there is one big play in the 1H of the 2003 title game where McNeil totally shoves another big boy in Jeff Graves right in the back to try and clear some space but he pushes him right into Melo. Melo got a pass from somebody then completed an and-1 in the lane. But, just a bruising type of guy to push other people around for a change, even though it should’ve been a foul on McNeil, is what this team has been needing for awhile.
