Yeah, I suppose that remains the unknown - how Red does as a bench coach. After seeing Hop struggles I'm sure a lot of people will have some concerns. Same though, love his approach so far. Judah really needs to come back. For me! For my suffering! j/k

That Girard, Buddy, Jimmy, Swider, Jesse team was probably less athletic than 95% of the teams we played. Just insane that we did that on purpose. We were a mid major with height and lazy defense.(usually mid majors are at least scrappy hustlers) We will see how Autry is as a bench coach and there will surely be bumps in the road, but man do I love his roster building approach and recruiting prowess so far. If Judah comes back, we will at least have a chance to be very good. It's just wild in retrospect to think about a guy like BJ Johnson that could have spent so much time buried on the bench - cuz he couldn't cut it on defense. And then we just roll with THAT. It never made any sense. I mean, people chalked it up to "JB adjusting to the times" with the long ball - but the timing of that was just a little suspicious. lol We went from a team that couldn’t shoot at all but defended their asses off (Howard, Battle, Oshea, Marek team) to a team that could ONLY shoot in a matter of a couple years. Lol. The one team we had that had some depth and versatility(2020-21)everybody was run off or they transferred after the season. We are low in proven production, but man is the ceiling starting to get higher. Can’t wait.

Same. It's actually really exciting - even if we suck, I'll take the excitement I feel right now, because I miss anticipating the season. I still watched the games, but you sorta knew who we were before the season started and we usually underperformed even from there (at least to what I thought our downside was).
I always hated the takes when people would say, "you wanted shooting, now you got it - you can't make any of you happy!" No, I wanted shooting and defense! And the rest - just gimme a PG and/or some more shooting! Nobody asked anyone to burn the whole thing down and play the Upstate All Stars 40MPG.

It’s so weird that his dad played at St John’s when I was in college. They were the NIT champs, the year Cuse was champs. I remember them beating Duke in a close one, led by Marcus Hatten that year. One of my favorite non-SU games when I was in college.

Hahaha, amazing…..I love that I can find random memories that I haven’t thought about in 20 years, on YouTube.

I feel like they always had pretty good games - regardless of how good/bad SJ was.

It’s so weird that his dad played at St John’s when I was in college. It's so weird that we have players at all 5 spots that can run and dunk. It's been a bit since we had multiple guards that can finish strong - and not be so dependent on slow-developing backdowns leading into a fadeaway.

Agreed. I think I remember an incredible game that Duke barely won back when SJU had Artest. And I think I remember Bootsy Thornton going insane and having like 40 points in a win over Duke back then?

I thought they won too - I would have bet money on it. I found this: Bootsy Thornton's 40 points led the Red Storm in a valiant effort, but was ultimately not enough to equalize Duke's six players that reached double figures. In a game that has since been characterized as "one of the best ever played at Madison Square Garden," St. John's fell to Duke by four in overtime.Jan 28, 2012

January 24, 1999 - Duke 92, St. John's 88 (OT) (Rumbleinthegarden.com)Ah! So that was the Bootsy game I was thinking of. However, the following year St. John’s won 83-82 in OT with Bootsy hitting the game winning jumper with 13 seconds left! So there was a SJU win due to Bootsy! www.espn.com/ncb/2000/20000226/recap/sbpdau.htmlI’m not supposed to say this about a rival, but I legit liked those St. John’s teams. Loved Artest! Enjoyed Bootsy. Really liked Erick Barkley. Respected Postell and Glover. They had about 3 squads in a row, 98-00 that I generally rooted for other than against Cuse obviously, and really enjoyed watching.
