No doubt recruiting has taken a step back. But just to counter on all those points. 1) We have always played all zone. we have recruited to a system for sure which leads to going after some more under the radar guys that fit our mold. But all the mcd AA and top level guys that committed from 2000 on came to play all zone. 2) JB personality. Hes is very possibly cranky and tough on players. (we cant prove this and no one has really ever left SU bad mouthing him). But even so, that has been his personality for years as well. When we won in 03 or the sustained success from 06-12 he wasnt running up and down sidelines and a coach players want to run through a wall for. 3) JB age. Yes he is older and the uncertainty doesnt help, cant deny that. But just if were looking in conference. Roy and K are no spring chickens (prob more health concerns too and they dont have succession plans in place) My point is not to say the recruiting hasnt taken a step back because it very clearly has. I just think it is a convenient to blame JB. High end recruits like Melo, Donte Green, Scoop, Fab, Dion, Rak, Jerami Grant, Ennis, Bazley, and more that i am missing all committed to play for the same older, crankier, all zone coach we have now. In my opinion the issue does not lie at the lack of 5 star top 20 kids. It is that we have not been able to identify and develop the 4 year Fairs, Southerlands, Triches, Josephs, and so on that allow you to have sustained success. A foundation leads to wins year in and out, which can then be supplemented with high end 1-2 year guys. Good points for sure. One of the issues we’re facing, IMO, is that no high school kid knows who MCW or Waiters is for the most part. Rak? Melo is done and perceived as a bum. Unfair but it is what it is. What high school players have seen are really poor fundamentals all over the court mainly ballhandling, passing, and continued no post threats. We have trouble scoring and I don’t think all-Zone is as cool or chic as it once was. Part of it because we seemingly can’t rebound well and get up and down the court anymore. Lack of speed as well. Big stylistic drawbacks, IMO. Also, Mike Hopkins is gone. HE is the one who had the connects and relationships. Even Red Autry isn’t in the same league and, GMac, well...he’s overmatched to say the least. I think the botched succession plan still doesn’t sit well with certain H.S./AAU coaches. Just my opinion there. Players seem to want to run through walls for Roy Williams and other old timers. Too many missed and wasted scholarships when we could ill afford to do so. Kaleb, BJ, Chino, Matt M, Ron Patterson, etc. Moustapha Diagne debacle. Ties in with your point of not being able to find those program guys like Villanova/UNC seem to always develop. Certain things aren’t JB’s fault of course but at this stage I feel like he’s holding the program hostage. There’s a middle finger- to-everybody stubborness that is getting tiresome. Not willing to come out of the zone for a few possessions to mix things up is just one example. The constant defensive and rude behavior. He says we will move the ball more but I’ll have to see it to believe it. He has ALWAYS been a guy who doesn’t mind ball stopping and just ISO a guy while everybody watches. Bad shots are all good. These days teams are whipping the ball around and moving it better than ever. JB’s system only works when you have some lottery type ISO talents. We don’t have any now and doesn’t seem like we have some coming in. We’ll see. Really concerned about this coming season.

I agree that JB is holding SU hostage. What's happened (as I shared before) isn't necessarily his fault, but it is what it is. He does have this "middle finger" to the world attitude right now. IMO, he's trashing the very program he built. It's a shame that he's too blind to see it. But like most folks as they age, he doesn't want to call it quits, let alone know that it's time.
As a result, next year may very well be our first losing season. Some will argue the need for patience because of the young roster. I argue that roster management is part of JB's job. When you have no natural point guards, and beanpole center and power forwards, and mostly youth...the coach must accept blame. This is the roster he recruited.
I also won't listen to the excuse about Sidibe being injured. I said over a year ago that surgery wouldn't fix him, and got flamed for it. I said we needed to acquire a college ready big for two years. All we did is go out and get beanpole projects. That's not to say that JBA and JE can't become good players, but our strength and conditioning program is non-existent, and JBA has an achilles injury history. No one is talking about that right now, but there is a reason why all the other programs dropped him, and pulled their offers off the table.
So back to JB... is the decline in the program his fault? My answer is partially, but other factors have contributed (corruption, unfair sanctions, age, etc). I wish he'd move on because I can see the writing on the wall. The incoming class (which has talent-though not elite) will likely be the last solid class until JB leaves. Recruiting won't get easier, only harder. That is why he needs to retire. He's a legend who needs to move on.

Also, we need to be more of a national recruiting program. This will come from a younger HC who will invigorate and inject some life into the program whoever that may be.
Givony tweeted the other day that the talent from TX and the south is just dominating in the EYBL. Now TX has always had ballers from Dallas/Houston but Givony is saying that it is better than ever right now. NYC players aren’t what they used to be. We don’t even mine Philly/DC/MD/NJ like we once did. Some will say that we went down to SC to get Braswell. Braswell is and always will be a project. My suspicion is there won’t be opportunities for him to see the floor much in the coming years so he’ll probably transfer out. Another wasted scholly. Rinse and repeat.

Nate Oats has really hit the trail since he got the gig at Alabama a month or so ago. This would have been nice to see with our program and I like the guy.

Agree with Mike Brey about this and they should put the hammer down on these coach's, especially Wade and Miller.

Of course Sean Miller had no idea this was happening. Bahahaha!!! Miller knew!!! Book it! Of course he did. There are so many shady programs... Arizona, Oregon, Duke, Kentucky, UNC, Auburn... the FBI investigation doesn’t seem to have stopped the cheating at all.
