This was a monster win, and a gutty performance by Syracuse. After having the night to calm down and think things over here are some of my thoughts:
1. Syracuse needs this type of effort every night out. The fact that we played like this 48 hours after playing a putrid game against Ga Tech is hard to fathom. It was like watching two different teams. I know that got brought up in the post game interview withJB and he got defensive. But the team absolutely did not play with the same level of intensity both games. It was not all shooting. That's ludicrous. Was it a factor, of course. But there was a huge difference in effort in the Duke game.
2. We got really lucky that Reddish didn't play, and Tre's injury changed the complexion of the game. That's a huge break for us.
3. This was a very poor coaching job by Coach K. Granted Tre went down and they lost the ability to pressure the ball. But they chucked up 3 after 3 after 3 despite our inability to guard them inside. We were in bad foul trouble and they didn't capitalize on it at all. We had no one who could guard Zion, or their other bigs inside. I realize you don't Game plan for losing two starters, but Coach K should've made it a bigger priority to pound it inside, especially with our foul trouble.
4. Tyus was a beast. He really turned it up a notch. I'm really really happy for him.
5. Hughes shot ended up being the difference in the game. Truly an incredible shot. ESPN play of the night!!!
6. Oshae is still so soft. He is not stronger and he has not improved his ability to finish through contact. That's got to improve.
7. Carey looked overwhelmed. He's got talent but he's hardly a one and done. That's actually a good thing because he will be returning instead of being a one and done as many projected.
8. Sidibe didn't get very much playing time, so there's not much to write about him.
9. Dolejaz is completely outmatched at the center position. BUT I admire his courage to take the charge on Zion. Hope he's ok. He had a few nice passes. If he could ever bulk up, his court vision and IQ could really make him a threat.
10. Chewy played a great game. That said, his success had a lot to do with Duke chucking up threes and not pounding the paint. Give credit to Chewy for capitalizing on Duke's poor game plan. The effort was there tonight. It needs to be there every night for us to have a chance against good teams.
11. Frank was awful in the first half, especially against Tre. He played much better in the second half. It was good to see him driving the ball a bit more.
12. Coach K gets so much credit for being a legendary coach, but it wasn't on display last night. Has he become lazy with game planning/coaching because of the number of 5 star guys on his team? I guess you can argue that the game plan got scrapped with Reddish and Tre out. But I'm shocked at the lack of in game adjustments. They should've thrown the ball inside on every possession.
13. This win may be huge come selection time in March. Duke was 90-0 as a #1 team against unranked opponents at home. That's a HUGE win.
14. My heart is happy that we won. My head is wondering if a win like this (that could possibly propel us back on the right side of the bubble) could in the long run be detrimental to the program by prolonging JB's tenure at Syracuse. It seems every time he's in the doghouse the team pulls off some miracle win or run in the tournament that ends up skewing the fact that we've been a bubble team for years now, and our recruiting is sub standard. I'm conflicted...
15. Have at it guys... would love to hear your thoughts on the game, and the implications for this season and the future.
