This kid has his fair share of supporters and skeptics. His supporters claim he does the little things that don't show up in the box score, and they say he has a high IQ. He can certainly get up and down the court and apparently he prides himself on his defense. That said, his shooting form is flawed. He's not an alpha type guy, and appears to be a rather passive player. I haven't seen enough of him to form an opinion, but I will say this much...
Why oh why can't we get someone with some strength with an alpha dog mentality? Seriously! Look at our recent centers and forwards...
Sidibe? Chukwu? Dolejaz? Oshae?
None of these guys could finish a play through contact. All soft.
And now we have three more soft finesse guys with no beef.
JBA? Jesse? Woody?
I'm not knocking Woody, or Jesse or JBA individually. But my God, we are soft as shit. JB get us some beef!!!
It's going to be a long season, I'm afraid. We're going to get eaten alive.

not an "alpha". What does that even mean. Were CJ fair or Brandon Triche such "alphas". I agree with you that some beef at the 5 wouldnt hurt. But this kid is a prototypical syracuse 3/4. It has been that way for years, and as along as we continue to run zone (which we will if Hop comes back) it still will be.
And yes it is good for teams to have a leader and a voice, but not everyone needs to be that. Lets wait till he steps on campus before we critique for him on that front.

I'm not criticizing any of our recruits individually. I'm pointing out that we lack strength and weight. I think you're misunderstanding what I mean by alpha. While it would be nice to have an alpha dog like a Devo, what I meant was a big guy who knows how to and isn't afraid to take it to the rack with strength and authority. Dolejaz can't do that. Oshae contorted his body to avoid contact. Chewy couldn't finish at the rim, and neither could Sidibe with any size/strength against him. So maybe alpha was the wrong term, but my point is valid. We need a guy that has the strength to go up strong and finish through contact. The current guys we have coming in may very well be nice players, but none of them provide the beef we need. We're going to get killed on the boards. The majority of the best SU teams had big guys with size AND strength. (Otis Hill, McNeil, Forth, Fab, Onuaku, Derrick Coleman, Etan, etc). I'm tired of getting manhandled by stronger teams. Our bigs were an embarrassment last season, and that's not an understatement. I think Hopkins has a great thing going in Washington. I'd be pleasantly shocked if he returned.

Fair enough. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Thought you meant "alpha" in terms of mentality and not physical stature. I do not disagree with you there, just think the way they game is evolving makes it tougher and tougher to find that.
10 years ago all the 5 star 4/5s were down in the block using beef. Now they know to get to the league they need to be able to step out and hit a 3 imo.

I'm not necessarily advocating for a back to the basket 4/5. I like JBA and Jesse's skill set. But none of our bigs are strong. You can be a stretch 4/5 and still be able to go to the basket with authority and absorb contact. None of our guys could do that last season, and I suspect the guys we have coming in won't either. The biggest problem has been the lack of a real strength and conditioning program. Frustrating to get boxed out by UNC and Duke with one arm tied behind their backs. It really was embarrassing how soft we were. Marek manning the middle is a joke. I'm praying JBA, Jesse and Woody can be different.

Do you think maybe Woody is overrated a bit? Whatcha all think? Heβs got some hops, but heβs kinda passive with the ball. His D is solid, but like most players SU recruits heβs going to need help in the weight room.
What former SU player would be a reasonable comp? Iβm thinking maybe CJ Fair with a little less game?

Woody played on a team where they didn't need his O but he did all the little dirty things. Not sure what to make with his game but if he does stay here he'll be a 4 year player, but a chance he gets recruited over. Time will tell.
Hard to compare his game to any SU player as his offense isn't the greatest right now. Maybe he redshirts next year.

Woody + Kadary is already a pretty decent class, especially defensively 6.3.6
