This game is posted in the Youtube Link Thread, but wanted to watch this game again and note some observations.
-Coleman was not good on offense. But his thickness made people worry. Big body. I miss this type of Syracuse big man.
-Gbinije was an excellent point forward. Was seeking revenge in this game.
-Weird seeing Mali at the 3.
-let’s hope sophomore Buddy can equal senior Cooney. JB has said Buddy attacks the paint as a frosh better than Cooney did at his age.
-Roberson was an elite role player. I see paralelles between begging our modern 5s for offense wirh praying that Roberson scores
-we haven’t had a pure shooter starting since Cooney. I really hope Boeheim comes off the bench next year, but it should be noted how having pure deep threats will open up our offense. We have been dependent on driving gaurds, and defenses have been able to oversell on ibterior defense on their drives because we have no shooters. Having shooters will open up the lane for our driving gaurds to either attack or dish outside for an open look.
-Weird how we haven’t recruited more Gbinije type point forwards. Kid was cool as a cucumber bringing up the ball. Ferocious attacker. Was never intimidated by full court press.
-we beat duke by giving them open shots from 3 to miss.
-omg frank howard played in this game and brougt the ball up. He threw it out of bounds over his back
-lots of the one v one perimeter offense we’re used to seeing, but the ball zips so much more than we saw these last two years
-my brain turned to scrambled eggs watching our offense involve guys creating separation via off ball screens and moving off the ball. WE CAN DO THAT???
-watching coleman get worked in the middle makes me understand why JB has been so committed to bean poles.
-ROBERSON DROPPING THE HAMMER ON AN ALLEY OOP I MISS ALLEY OOPS
-hopefully hughes develops a handle over the offseason because our offense would hum if he could create off the bounce for himself.
-dolezaj needs to watch Lydon film. If Marek could knock down set threes like lydon, and alter shots without fouling like lydon, he will be a stud. Needs to beef up. Lydon was thin in the center and MD is thinner
-Gbinije was so damn good
-we are so unaccustomed to having an offense with multiple ball handlers now. I think we will be pleasantly surprised by how our offense moves and flows next year. Hughes really needs to develop his handles.
-“They like Frank Howard” -Dickie V
-lydon got extensive center minutes over coleman in this game. Gives me hope about marek holding his own there. Lydon is thricker and also a better ball handler/shooter. If Dole can get to 210 that would rule
-girard shooting off screens > cooney shooting off screens
-listening to shulman and vitale praise cooney makes me remember how much i hated him
-refs were bad three years ago too
-freshman frank howard was more effective in this game than freshman jalen carey was. Longer leash though
-i forget how frustrating cooney was
-hilarious that Grayson Allen had a halftime buzzer beater waived off
-roberson cleaning the offensive glass carried us
-this game was 38-35 under 14 min in the second half
-honestly forgot what it was like to have a team with multiple people that can create their own shot without being offensive black holes
-we will be surprisingly refreshed with how shooting threats can open up the half court offense
-there will be an open competition for PG and it will be fun to see how the competition for it shakes out. Gbinije was so good as a mature ball handler who made good decisions.
-Richardson and Cooney were so great at spreading the floor and opening up dribble drives. Drooling over our incoming shooters, but Hughes really needs to develop a dribble game to get to that next level.
-we destroyed Duke on the offensive boards in this game. Mostly due to roberson. Offensive boards lead to second chance open threes for Cooney. I wish we had beefy bigs, but if we can coach Edwards and JBA to be ferocious on the offensive glass, they will shine
-Gbinije was incredible. big/strong enough to attack the paint, smart enough to make the righth pass, mature, brilliant, could shoot from anywhere. Wow.
-fun to see a team play off ball offense
-weird to think people were intimidated by a Duke team featured by frosh Brandon Ingram and Soph Grayson they couldnt shoot for shit
-Gbinije made so many slick pocket passes to Roberson off pick and rolls. Such a smart player.
-Roberson played one of the best games I have seen of an SU 4. 20+ boards ARE YOU SERIOUS??
-Plumlee bodied Lydon all night when he got the ball at the block from the outside. Bt there was a reason Lydon was played at the 5 over Coleman anyway. Lydon pick and pops drew out his assigned big to the perimeter and opened up the paint
-Gbinije missed the front half of a 1 and 1 in the final min with Cuse up 1.
-Watching Coach K try and comprehend that Dook didn’t get the ticky tack loose ball foul that he is known to leverage the refs for made me believe in justice again. It had to be long overdue non call that the Fair carge was.
-i could make a woman pregnant listening to Camerons booing.
**THINGS TO TAKE AWAY FROM THIS FOR FUTURE TEAMS**
-cant overstate how much we will benefit from multiple ball handlers
-an offense wirh dead eye shooters off ball is something we havent had in years and will create space in the paint
-watching a gaurd that can drive but also zip the ball around and create offense makes me more confident in Joe Girard at the point. Was Ennis that much more physically imposing as a FROSH?
-Lydon played 20+ Min at the 5 in this game. Granted TL is more built/a better shooter than Marek, but if Dolezaj can gain enough weight, we could have a killer small ball line up.
-We will have a lot of young blood and competition next season. There will be little to zero expectations. We shine under the radar. It will be a fun team to watch, they will have more time to work together considering the Italy trip and the practices leading up to them. I think our frosh guys have been underlooked and will be able to play righth away.
