I know this is probably crazy, but with Melo not playing in the NBA, maybe he could become a head coach? Look at what Penny is doing recruiting at Memphis. You don’t have to be a coaching legend if you can get a top five class regularly. Melo could replace JB? Can you imagine the hype? Can you imagine the boost to recruiting? Seriously, what’s he doing now? He might very well be interested. I can’t think of anyone who could bring more (in house candidate) than Melo. Oh I’m salivating at what that might do for Syracuse.

Love Melo. But this is silly for a variety of reasons...

Why? Because you say so? Melo is the most beloved SU player ever. He misses basketball. Hire great assistants around him.

Because Carmelo Anthony and his family with their hundreds of millions of dollars want to spend their life living in Syracuse? Don't forget recruiting all over the country? Dealing with the NCAA and school administration?
Penny was also coaching High school at the time. Again I love Melo, but even if recruiting was on fire with him, his first season ever coaching would be in the ACC? Penny, Juwan Howard, and so on have all coached at some level before.

Yeah Penny went back to grass roots. Coached in high school/AAU back in the Memphis area and was very successful. Part of the reason he is killing it on the recruiting trail.

Rusty I like your enthusiasm, and would love to have Melo back at Syracuse, but with no coaching experience at all, I don’t see this happening. I do agree he wants to still be involved in the game though. What that ends up looking like, I have no idea. I could actually see him as an analyst before I can see him coaching.

You seriously want someone to go into coaching who is selfish at times on offense and doesn't care about playing D most of the time.

He’s not a great defender but I bet JB probably wasn’t a great defender either. You don’t have to be to coach. How mAny shots did Bernie Fine block in his day before he worked with the centers? My idea was to have him recruit, and surround him with competent heady assistants. I think Melo misses the game. I know it’s not going to happen, but I don’t think it’s as stupid an idea as you guys make it sound.

I just would question Melo’s knowledge of the game as he always just was an ISO player. Not sure how much of a teacher he could be in general. As far as being selfish I think there is some merit to this. Bottom line he didn’t want to accept his role in the last couple of landing spots. That’s being selfish. His athleticism seriously deteriorated and most times even in the paint he would get packed. His role was relegated to a dude who camps out in the corner launching threes. I’m not sure he was capable of doing much more, frankly. Billups pretty much nailed it in that one interview. He wasn’t willing to accept his role and realize he isn’t the force and scorer he once was. Also, not sure how much cred Melo has with H.S.kids these days being that he’s been a non-factor in the league the past four years or so with drama to boot.

Your last remark is something I hadn’t thought about... you’re right about Melo maybe not having enough “cred” with the high school kids because of poor play and the way he’s been portrayed by the media lately. That might hurt his chances to recruit. Point taken. But I definitely don’t think it’s selfish of Melo to think he’s still capable of playing. Maybe delusional, but not selfish. I mean to compare, is JB is selfish for wanting to coach his son, and stay the head coach probably longer than he should since we’ve been in a bit of a downfall since our violations? JB thinks he hasn’t missed a beat. That doesn’t make him selfish, especially considering he built the program. It might turn out that JB has overestimated his ability to keep pace in today’s game, it might not. We’ll see how his twilight years develop. But I have to say this.... Call me stupid for suggesting Melo coach before calling Melo or JB selfish. That’s really harsh.

He probably is delusional if he thinks he can be a starter or big scorer in the league currently. As far as Boeheim goes...personally I think he is doing the program harm every game and year he stays on as the coach. That’s for another discussion.
