This is very bad, quite bad. I just don't see a likely scenario without Griffin that ends well for us - without some new addition to the roster that CAN play immediately. There are possibilities, but they seem like we would need everything to break just the right way for us. The ACC would need to be somewhat down again, maybe not at the top, but that would help, but overall, we need about half the league at least to be abysmal again. If one of our 5s REALLY turns the corner, likely two, that would really go a long way toward helping us overcome a no Griffin scenario. Richmond almost would have to be extraordinary from the jump. - The thing that concerns me about our guards is that we're constructed in way that, at least in my opinion, so favors the starters that it will be very difficult for a younger player to break through the guard wall.
- You would need either the guard to be so good that he simply cannot sit, or JB to show some level of faith in someone struggling early on - something that has only been on display once in the past few years. He's not the most patient with Frosh who struggle out the gate.
- The biggest issue, is, for fans, media, etc., it's hard not to get excited about just how great our guards look against mid-majors. They're dynamic! They score! They can do things like score inside and out! We're fine! This narrative played out last year - the limitations they have do not matter against mid-majors, those limitations start to shine very brightly against higher level competition though. However, by then, we've buried everyone on the bench and we're really not positioned well when we need secondary ball-handlers to create, defensively sound players, and without Eli, I'm not sure we have a primary ball handler that can create VERY well off the bounce. I suppose JGIII is adequate for a PG, but not much more than that.
Guerrier needs to develop a lot and show a decent floor game.
So, perhaps everything falls in line and we're fine. I do hope so.
Marek finally becomes consistently awesome and can operate like Toni Kukoc for 80% of a game?
