Well, I mean we knew they weren’t going to be shooting 20% all game.

Jesse should get the ball every time down the court. It’s free throw shots every single time.

Can we ask Nova if they want Swider back?

Buddy just didn’t have it. Swider can hit open 3s and board against the bad-average teams. Not much else.
Joe lost steam after 30 minutes.

Jesse the biggest improvement that fast in Cuse history? He had a rough game compared to how he’s been playing(which shows how expectations have changed) but still blocked a bunch of shots and drew a lot of fouls. Excited to see how good he gets. Lots of upside.

Just a strength thing with Jesse like Bilas said. He should be stronger by now. At least we have SOME decent C presence down there. Love how when he catches a pass close to the rim on a fastbreak he never brings it down and dribbles. Keeps it high.
Disgraceful on the boards. It’s the scheme but also the bodies. We are just overpowered. Won’t get fixed just have to pray we play finesse teams.
Another game where the old man allows and/or draws up too much ISO. You can do that with Jimmy as a Plan C or D but move more on offense off the ball. Way too much ISO ball with barely any NBA talents. It’s not smart basketball and it shows with pitiful assist numbers. Too much ISO ball against the wrong type of team. Coaching.
Swider is just having to do too much here. Much like Buddy. These dudes are realistically options 3 or 4 on good teams or even 6th men. Nothing wrong with that. Swider tried especially in the 1H on the glass. He tries. They all try. But the old man deploys them like Kobe and Lamar Odom out there. No.

Thought we hung in there and battled in the first half. Unfortunately we are not built to win if Buddy has an off night, let alone a night as bad as that.
I do think we are mildly improving (with a limited ceiling). In an ideal world we win out non conference and beat up on a bad ACC to get a tourney bid. Lots of season left but we left ourselves little margin of error. Our traditional 12-8 in ACC play wont get it done.

Though depends on who we beat and avoiding bad losses. Hopefully Indiana has a good season. And hopefully Colgate wins their league.

So much to unpack after this game. Looking at Villanova's shooting numbers, if you gave me the percentages before the game of what they shot I’d guess we won by 15+, we lost by double digits.
4 assists, i know bees banned me because literally piece for piece of what our flaws were the entire off season are coming true. Worst defense in ur zones history, no point guard and we can’t handle pressure, zero off the ball movement, and lack of athleticism.
In our two exhibitions and first two games of the year, we saw a fluid offense that made the extra pass which led to open shots, now we’re seeing a ton of iso which I don’t believe we have one above average iso player. Jimmy was great last night on offense, but he will not be able to do that against bigger players, I don’t think people realize how small Nova is, that’s one advantage we had.
If I hear one more person cite how Cole had 12 rebounds I’m going to start pulling hair out, by default we’re bound to get rebounds and usually it’s a forward, Cole is so slow and lacks any sort of movement faster than a tortoise that he is always going to be in a spot where the ball literally falls into his arms. Looking back at the game there are maybe 1 or 2 rebounds that he legitimately went up and got, reminds me of Westbrook on the Thunder when he averaged 10, but realistically probably fought for 1-2 rebounds a game.
20+ rebound advantage for our opponents is gross, I’ve learned that we’re not going to be a great rebounding team ever, but last night was beyond that, especially considering their size, there is literally zero excuse for it.
I’ve heard people say we’re better this year than last, whomever says that has shit for brains and doesn’t have a clue what they’re talking about.
Maybe we turn this around, but I just don’t see it. 18 wins is our cap for the regular season, I don’t see how we go higher than that.

Duke is obviously good, there will be one team where we’re like wtf how is their record that good (won’t be us) and that means we need to be in the next 3 which would be 5 acc teams dancing, I just can’t see it. Nova didn’t pressure the ball at all, I have a feeling a lot of acc teams will which won’t be good for our offense which is our only saving grace.

Once our hoists/jacks from 3 pulling up started to miss I knew we were cooked. 27 offensive rebounds and 15-4 assists in favor of Villanova is lopsided. Doesn’t matter if Buddy is off or not. We are tactically doing so much 1-on-1 against a team like Nova who switches everything but has the bodies and athletes. It’s not winning basketball.

We are tactically doing so much 1-on-1 against a team like Nova who switches everything but has the bodies and athletes. It’s not winning basketball. If Edwards was just a little stronger and further along, and the refs were decent - he could’ve had 20-25. There were opportunities there. Nova was either fouling him with the call(and he was only 8-15 at the line), fouling him without the call, or taking the ball away for him - 1 or 2 great blocks from behind on him too. But he was “almost” there a number of times. He plays even just a little bit better and gets some whistles and he probably has 15-17. Get that a even just two open Buddy 3’s go down(he missed a few wide open, easy ones), and this is anybody’s game. Even with all our limitations, Edwards is not far away from being a game changer for us. If these stumpy little teams want to switch screens with him - most of them are not going to be able to do what Nova did - maul him. Nova’s got some animals, and they got the benefit of how the game was called too which made them even tougher to deal with. Jesse gets it to the rim a little quicker a few times and finishes through contact a couple times, and we suddenly have 4-5 more assists. He’s gonna have 7-8 hoops in a lot of other games where teams try to do what Nova did.
