Am i surprised? No. He let two foundational players with NBA potential leave the program to keep a slow guard and to bring in his other son. He got his family photo. What do we get? Another 14+ loss season. This is officially a disaster.

It was bad. Was able to watch it with an ESPN+ subscription that I promptly cancelled.
This was a horrendous game defensively for Buddy. Getting sucked into the middle, slow to loose balls, etc. Offensively he and his bro got packed a few times lol. Speaking of Jimmy…even worse than his bro on D but the old man is going to blame Jesse and Benny for everything. Swider wants to play the game like a guard.
This team still screams bubble. What’s crazy is that the Andrew White team and this current team are probably the two best 3pt shooting and FT shooting squads of Boeheim’s tenure. Also probably the worst two teams defensively in his tenure. Just not enough athletes also. BIG issue. All that shooting null and void since this team seems destined for the Bubble and possibly NIT as well. All because of recruiting failures then trying to create a team around his son who he thinks has Kobe Bryant’s game with a bunch of buddies of the sons.

Brutal brutal brutal. Now I do think it was an awful match up for us in terms how they can stroke the hell out of it. Teams in the ACC wont move the ball and shoot it that well vs the zone.
But all the issues we were concerned about came to life. Woefully un athletic defensively, no one can break anyone down off the dribble, and Boeheim nepotism. Granted Cole was in foul trouble, but Jimmy was really bad.
Bahamas is going to tell us a lot.

Embarrassing. We’re starting four slow guys, and no athletes. Unless we’re shooting lights out we’re in for a long season.

The Zone this season (and at times last year) plays into the hands of teams like Colgate. We don’t offer any resistance, don’t get into them, make them feel us, etc. Our Zone works sometimes against superior athletic teams lately in the Tourney who are ill prepared to face it. They panic, stall, jack shots, etc. That’s the equalizer.
Colgate lost to a bad defensive NC St team (at least per Ken Pom last year-#87 Def Efficiency-worse than us even) without their starting C Manny Bates who recently suffered a season ending injury. Our Zone was doing Colgate favors. They were like kids in a candy shop.
Still, there were often times where we weren’t getting dribble penetration against those guys and getting easy shots. Really worrisome.

I think that is spot on. Not that we are a 3 seed, but the game had the feel of a 14 seed that does all the correct things well and matches up well to beat a superior opponent.
I am not taking solace in losing to Colgate and do not think we are a final 4 team, but I do stand by the fact that they are probably one of if not the best passing/shooting team we will see against the zone. The ball did not stick in someone's hand for more than a second. The ironic part about being woefully unathletic is that we are best suited to beat the more athletic teams because the zone forces them to play exactly how they do not want to. Longer possessions, moving the basketball, and making shots.
The game reminded me of the Notre Dame or Buffalo game last year. We couldnt stop a nose bleed and their guards had their way getting into the middle of the zone opening everything up. Difference is we did not have a Kadary who could help stop that, and also get out in transition for easy points or even to the basket in the half court. Sucks he is not here because he again logged only 17 minutes last night and looks even further down on the SH depth chart at guard then he would of been here. (Despite starting). Same for Woody Newton logging a total of 4 minutes vs college of charleston.

Colgate was well prepared but it’s OUR Zone they were playing against. I have a feeling that if Duke went Zone (they use it a little the past few years) against Colgate then they would fare better than us. Very curious about this VCU game. They lost a ton of guys due to injuries before the season started. They play hard but can’t score. They CAN really defend. They will get up on Joe and the other guys all game. Hope we can use that against them.
