I’m so very curious what JB’s reasoning and goal was in creating this roster. Maybe it’s about simply taking what we could get.
The man supposedly watches all these games 24/7. What does he think when watching other Top 25ish teams when compared to his? “Oh we’re good here.” “Oh we’re good there.” “We have speed and guards like them.” “Oh shit look at those monsters inside. Wish we had that.”
Seriously, what was/is he thinking? Did he just want to settle early in the portal and bring in friends of the boys who would know their roles and not complain much? Recruits they knew before? Easy-peasy. Did he really think this is a roster with enough parts and athletes? Meanwhile, there are schollies available.

The stupid 100% zone defense is the entire problem. People will say why?...he has had great teams here in these 40+ years while employing a zone-only defense! To them I say the past is the past and the game, the kids, the allure of the Dome and Boeheim have all changed. Nowadays all we hear is this stupid excuse or recruiting trail mantra- "this player doesn't have the length to fit the zone". Lol. Ok so you go out on the recruiting trail immediately limiting your pool by this stupid zone requirement? Length? Nice excuse to use when a 5 star (with no length? Lol) doesn't want to come here. It's the length!
We already know that elite recruits immediately take us off their list because of the stupid zone and probably not wanting to play for this guy, so we're immediately working from a smaller pool anyways. I just want to move on to the next chapter. I am so tired of this.

I get it man. It’s a hard watch and something needs to be done because the in game coaching now is faltering and there isn’t much to do with this roster in terms of tinkering.
I’ve already factored in All Zone and that being a deterrent in my OP. I.E. the top players cross us off the list automatically like you said. Certainly now that Hopkins is no longer around. I’m talking about this current team. Why this roster? What does he think we truly have? He watches all this bball and is some savant some people say. He was good with this roster heading into the season to the point of leaving scholarships available? His job is to build the best possible team. Not avoid certain positions to build depth so certain players are tunneled into heavy minutes and zero/limited replacements. Now he laments more and more in every presser how he has no bench and they have no options. Why is that lol? The fact that he said (paraphrasing) that they aren’t capable of beating #6 Villanova and how he was pleased with losing to them is fireable in and of itself. Sounds like a man who is fine with going down with the ship as the water keeps rising.

I am not tied to the zone, but the zone in my opinion was not the problem. Not having a point guard was a problem, and over-reliance on certain players at times to the detriment of development were bigger concerns. We needed a PG and a Buddy "type" player as depth. We seemed to instead make that "depth" need the focal point of the team, and we constructed a roster to his benefit.
I think JB really thought he was on to something here, but he wasn't, and truthfully, I think he's insane to see what he thought he saw. It could never work. The zone cannot thrive with 4 slow footed players. Perhaps it could work if Buddy was the same player as JJ Reddick, and Cole was the same player as Lydon, but that is not close to reality.

I’m talking myself into a Torrence, Girard, Williams, Anselem, Edwards lineup next year bringing back Syracuse size and length inside, with two senior guards getting it done in backcourt.
I need hope.

I need hope. We move to one shooter and maybe a tad better on defense but not much. If Benny does stick around he really needs to improve. I’m sure we’ll hit the portal again but I don’t see any possible way we’re better next year as it stands right now.

In terms of roster construction and all the games he watches etc, I think it is very very simple to explain how this team has been built.
He has crafted the roster around Buddy. I love Buddy. Hard worker. Great player. Has gotten worlds better. But it is centered around a lot of volume and usage. But ultimately JB has built the last 2 years around him.
Everyone gets all up in arms over JG3 playing the point and Kadary transferring when in my opinion its very simple. If Joe was playing the position he should, well then hes splitting time with Buddy. And what happens last year if Buddy is having a poor shooting game and Joe is shooting well like hes shown he can do? Well Kadary gets 34 mpg at the point, Joe plays 30, and Buddy gets 14. The roster has been built so that was never a possibility.

Furthermore, I bet (hope at least) that the staff ideally was counting on Carey and Goodine to be the SU main starters for a few years. Girard and Buddy coming off the bench as specialists which is the roles they are best suited for. Fortunately Buddy has really improved to the degree he has or else we would really be screwed. Still, no major program with Top 25 aspirations is tailoring their offense around a Buddy-type nor would he be playing 38mpg anywhere else. No chance. Nope. Sidibe’s injuries at C and the fact that he has really been slow developing have been a factor in the paint. Too many busts on schollies like JBA and not enough schollies currently being used. Missing on higher profile targets like the Isaiah Stewarts in the paint as well and here we are. I’m chalking it up to the old man being truly delusional now and not with it mentally if he honestly thinks (or thought preseason) this current team and trajectory can compete for anything beyond the current Bubble status quo. Many of us posters thought this was a Bubble squad preseason and were mocked on various platforms. Well, again, here we are.

We seem content to just play the players for 40 minutes that give the coach the least headaches. Right now I'm not sure what fix I would try, but maybe: SYMIR BUDDY BENNY DON'T CARE EDWARDS Maybe Joe will transfer if he loses the starting job.
