Pounding the portal is now more important than recruiting high schoolers. A proven guy in the portal is actually worth more than a freshman.
I’ll take a 22yo portal guy with 4 years experience than a five star high school kid with no experience ALMOST every time.
Experience counts. Maturity counts. Physical conditioning and strength counts.
It’s why PayPal Cal doesn’t win anymore. Duke too.

Piggybacking off this…
Maliq Brown should’ve been considered more valuable than Donnie Freeman.
Last time we had a five star guy (Benny) it didn’t turn out so well. Banking on Freeman when you know whatcha got with Maliq is a huge gamble, one I wouldn’t have taken if I was Red. Not saying it’ll happen, but what if Freeman isn’t ready year one?

I disagree. I suspect that recruiting the portal is a lot harder if you don't have relationships from some guys going back to high school.

Didn’t with Andrew White, or John Gillon… at least that I know of. Did NC State have prior offers/relationships for their five starters? I don’t know but I doubt it.

The entire landscape of college basketball has changed. Recruiting high school players is (currently) still important but I’m not sure if that will continue going forward. Look for the Blue bloods to recruit differently. 5 five star freshmen just don’t win in March. Look at the experience that the final teams in the tourney have this year. It speaks volumes.
NC State has five transfer starters.
Clemson had two seniors, two grad players and a junior.
Freshman just aren’t worth as much these days, and you don’t have time to develop them because if they don’t play they leave.
It’s basically turned into free agency.

He and Miles at TCU were a ton of fun that year and had a little run in the tournament, should have beaten Zona in the 2nd round, iirc. I was high on them again last season because they basically ran it back but our boy Lampkin bailed before the season ended.
