We all love winning, especially in March. We root for our team, orange pride and all, but then reality sets in and the deficiencies which have plagued us for the last 6-7 years catch up to us and bite us like they did last night. We lack a center. We lack a 16-18 foot catch and shoot big man who can cause a defense problems (hello Marek and your stupid pass-first mentality when you're standing alone 16 feet from the basket).
Marek will have the ball 16 feet from the basket, nobody within 5 feet of him and he doesn't even fathom shooting the ball. Amazing. He only looks to pass. Bring in a center who's first idea is catching the ball on the low blocks while looking to score, not pass. Not a 6'10" bean pole who stands out on the high blocks hoping someone's cutting around a screen to the basket.
Alan Griffin ended up being 25% what Hughes was in the regular season. In the tournament he became 0%. We are so bad at recruiting now that we hope we can strike gold in the transfer portal. Essentially we're hoping other programs develop talent that we can swipe up off the transfer market lol.
Times are bad here, and these small runs to the sweet 16 are only serving to hurt us because they're buying Boeheim more excuses and time. Sure, coach a deficient, under-recruited team to a couple improbable wins in the NCAA tourney and we'll just forget about how you can't recruit anymore.

Hard o argue with some of that We are a flawedd team with a lot mismatched parts

I can’t fathom any Marek slander. He’s been the ultimate Swiss Army knife for us. To criticize his play at center completely misses the point because he should never be playing center...

I agree with this sentiment. Marek played out of position his entire career at Syracuse and did it without complaining. He gave himself up, and took a pounding. Who knows what Marek’s career would’ve looked like if he had played the 3 or 4 with his size and passing ability. That said, recruiting continues to be a challenge. I was really hoping Benny would attract another 4-5 star player to join him. I hope we can snare Wahab from Georgetown and Symir Torrence comes too. But the point is valid... continuously relying on the transfer portal on a team like Syracuse that takes time to learn the zone isn’t a recipe for success.

This does not apply to things on the offensive end of the court w regard to Marek. He played the 5 in the zone scheme which has nothing to do with what we do on offense. On the offensive end a 6'10" dude should be able to knock down simple open jumpers. I am not arguing with you. I feel for Marek and the situation he was put in, but all he did in the game last night aside from a couple moves to the hole, was pass pass pass.

Yeah, kid was always out of position - and playing the 5 really had to take a toll on him.

He can and did hit that mid range jump shot. He just does not do it at volume. But when he shoots he makes a good chunk of them. Yes hes not the most assertive in seeking his shot but he does so much for us on the offensive end specifically as a ball handler to relieve pressure.

Marek has indeed been invaluable to us but it’s time for him to move on. If anything to by default get freaking JB to get a C in there with some physicality who can hold his ground, actually set screens that do something, etc.
Marek likely at this stage and age won’t develop a killer instinct nor put on the 25-30lbs he truly needs. We saw it against Houston and other times in the season like GTech, Duke, etc. If he was stronger he could make more plays on ball reversals/switches but he just can’t against solid college frontlines with some physicality. He might occasionally go by a big plodder like on UNC with quickness and make a play there. But, usually, like in the Houston game he gets walled up and bounces off their dudes lol, travels, or gets rejected. He tried some ISO moves against Houston where they D’d him up straight, put their hands up, and walled him up. Rough. Clemson did it too in game 1. I have no doubt that the same results would have happened against say Michigan, FSU, Oregon St, etc.
My worry is that if/when he leaves, his passing will truly be missed. Especially if the team struggles a bit passing the rock and starts reverting back to more of the old JB ISO ball. Marek probably was needed a bit too much because of other deficiencies on the team. But, I think it’s just time for him to go.

That explains his reluctance to shoot the ball.

That explains his reluctance to shoot the ball. Makes some sense - he was rarely taking jumpers. If he could have added that to his game on a regular basis he would have been much more dangerous.
