I just don't have a warm fuzzy on this one. The only one good thing we got going is that Red is the lead recruiter and not GMac.

If we miss on Isaiah, are we going after someone else? Or chances we will just hop on a lower rated project type? Cant imagine the class would be solely Woody right?

The state of this program is getting sad at times. JB can't recruit against the big boys anymore and GMac isn't a lead recruiter. Bad thing is we are stuck with this crap for at least 2 more years after this year until Buddy graduates.

IMO JB will either leave the scholarship open, or he’ll find some lower level recruit and hype him up... telling everyone he is a hidden gem. Better yet, he’ll pursue another Euro guy that no one knows anything about so no one can criticize the gross ineptitude of the staff to recruit elite talent anymore. So sick of this tactic. Dolejaz would never have started on any top 20 program in the country, and though I hope to be wrong, I suspect the same will be true with Jesse. Like Deano said, this is not going to get better until JB retires. We better get used to the NIT. Sad.

I am not ready to say the sky is falling. It was only a year ago that we had gotten a top 10 recruit in DB. Not really the coaching staffs fault he decided to bail on college. I think we got a legit shot here, Kentucky has other guys playing the same spot that are higher recruits. And any kid who thinks that Paypal Cal is honorable, just ask Quade Green and Kyle Wiltjer. Shit, Wiltjer started on a final four team and Cash Money told him to go find another program because the kids coming in were better than he was. Loyalty at its finest there. Alabama, I like Oats and I think he really did a good job at Buffalo, but it is a big step up to a power 5 conference team from being in a mid major league.

It was literally a gift from the gods and Griffin was somewhat familiar with him from his days in the Ohio scene at Dayton. He was never a target. I’m sure it was mutually beneficial for Quade and Wiltjer to move on. They weren’t going to get playing time and in Green’s case he was plain underperforming. No different at any football factory or at a place like Duke or UK. Players get recruited over. Better players will play. It is how it is. Landing Jackson is paramount. I don’t know how somebody (assuming they aren’t homers with the goggles) could be happy if Woody Newton ends up being the prize jewel in the class. That would simply be unacceptable for a program like Syracuse.

I don’t take pleasure out of expressing that the staff is struggling on the recruiting front. I’d much prefer to write differently. If the staff lands Isaiah, I’ll gladly eat some serious crow. My frustration is reflective how much I care, and not the other way around. I’d like to think we’ve got a slight chance given who else Kentucky is recruiting. He’d be the man at SU, and he’d be just another guy at Kentucky. Quade and Wiltjer are great examples.

The sky is not falling. But it’s not looking too pretty right now. We just lost our top target to UConn. That stings. I understand why you guys are concerned. For what it’s worth, I keep getting good feedback from my connections that we’re definitely in this recruitment with Isaiah.

I have been a pretty staunch defender of JB in here. If we miss on IJ for the first time I will say we have an issue. However if we do land him, it is a tough look for the "JB cant recruit with the big boys" narrative.
With that being said, it would be nice for G-Mac to land a priority recruit one of these days.

However if we do land him, it is a tough look for the "JB cant recruit with the big boys" narrative. With that being said, it would be nice for G-Mac to land a priority recruit one of these days. I think you’re right. Many people who have criticized JB, myself included, will be silenced if we land Isaiah. Nothing would make me happier. Contrary to what others may think, I’m not anti-JB. I think his loyalty to Syracuse, his hard work and his passion are unrivaled these days. We have been so fortunate to have him. He built Syracuse Basketball! He was also given the shaft by the NCAA, and unfairly punished. The penalties hurt the program and hampered our ability to recruit. I’ve never implied otherwise. But it’s becoming exceedingly more difficult for JB to fix the damage. His age makes it hard, the money and handlers make it really hard, and he’s been forced into running a squeaky clean program. He’s doing his best, and probably better than anyone else would do in the same circumstances. That said, I cannot help but wonder if we’d be better off with a a fresh start. A new coach without the pressure or target on his back? So let me clarify something... I don’t want JB out. I want a thriving Syracuse Basketball program again. Unfortunately, I just don’t think even JB’s best efforts can undo the damage inflicted by the NCAA to the SU brand, and I don’t think we’re recruiting on an even playing field. Others are cheating, we’re not, and it shows. If I was in charge of Karma, JB would win the National championship again before retiring and end his middle finger tour in style.

Totally fair point. I think just my overall point is if we land a 5 star from Michigan who we worked pretty hard for. Beat out in state MSU, Cal, Bama ($$). JB and red making multiple visits. Seemed to hit a HR during his official. It is just contrary to a lot of the current perception around the program.
No don't get me wrong. If we don't land IJ and have a class solely of Woody Newton. Or Woody and a Braswell guy we jump on late or a euro late as well (Marek/Edwards). It falls directly into that perception, and for the first time i would say that perception is becoming reality.

I will be stoked if we land Isaiah. And I won’t be one of those people who downplay the recruitment because of the fact that Isaiah pursued us first. At the end of the day if JB and company can land Isaiah over the likes of Kentucky, that’s one heck of a job! Period. Closing the deal over the likes of PayPal Cal would be an incredible sign that we’ve got our mojo back!

I would be stoked as well obviously if we land IJ. But, our recruiting has plummeted as of late. That can’t be ignored. 5 straight years of 13+ losses. Last year and this year, the ACC will not be a juggernaut. Another preseason poll (CBS) came out and we are picked 8th in the ACC preseason rankings lol. That shows you how our young players are perceived. Not good. Tired of seeing this. Tired of seeing ballhandling woes and combo guard conversion to PG fails. Tired of seeing lack of team speed (length yes) and poor fundamentals displayed all over the court. This all falls on the head man. JB. Long gone are the sanctions excuses. All of this stems from subpar recruiting and not so good player development. Naturally I will eat crow if we end up being some 4 or 5 seed. But, if it’s Feb making that push to the Tourney and we are (AGAIN) being mentioned in bubble world then I am NOT ok with this. Who should be?! Until I see a better brand of ball on the court, better pace, competent PG and C play, etc., then I will remain skeptical.
