The offense doesn’t have any consistent shooters. I hate that Red REFUSES to teach to play the half court offense thru Maliq Brown. How he touches the ball so little while Mintz and Starling just freelance is so frustrating and not fun to watch. When Taylor got taken out the offense was better.
I am just sick of the Jim Boeheim you gotta make shots offense. Scheme some pick and rolls, motion, actual offense. Not do yourself and make shots.
I hate it. It’s not sustainable basketball unless you have actual NBA talent which we haven’t had since Michael Gbinije.

Maliq and Copeland seem to have the best vision. Copeland tends to be a bit more erratic and seems to flourish more in a more open offense, but when the ball is moving and he gets some space he's certainly more than fine in half court.
Judah seems to like to kill the offense for ISO ball too much for a team with our faults - I thought maybe UNC was the team turning the corner, but I think (as you sorta note) we have limited shooting, so when Bell and JJ aren't hitting, our default back into a half court gets really ugly at times. Plus, if we have Bell and Taylor in, and Bell isn't shooting, we have two absolute duds on offense that can't really dribble drive, or pass well. It's tough to overcome that.
All that being said, I didn't see the game yesterday to really note anything from that.

I think it’s a symptom and not the cause.
The biggest problem is we have 2 players that can shoot. 2.
Maybe we need to work harder to get Starling and Bell even more looks, and Mintz/Taylor/Cuffe/Copeland need a “no outside shots, ever” rule implemented.
But having 2 good shooters on the whole team in 2024 is not a recipe for a real, smooth offense.

If he had shooters to pass off the drive it would work. But I hate the nature of our offense and have had for a long time. Maybe because I watch our good teams and see they actually run offense and don’t just free Lance everything it ticks me off. I have come to the realization though we are the last generation of fans that will actually care. I said this before but our school is just cashing checks. I can see the horizon and will I want to be relevant I don’t see it. Hopefully Fran Brown changes my mind but college football is becoming a fundraising sport and coaching doesn’t matter. It’s just raising money and spending money. Fran can recruit so we have hope. Basketball we are going to be hoping and praying each year. Our old fans will lionize the previous status quo and we will see it’s not going to change much. We have a good year or two but idea we can be a sustainable good program has been zapped out of me. I need to see it to believe it.

Guys like Gbinije, Hughes, and Battle were very good college players and just a notch below being legit NBA guys. Unfortunately we haven’t even had anybody nearly as good as them in the last 3-4 years. Maybe Starling when he’s a senior will be on that level?

Harder to retain those types of players for four years in this new climate, of course. I think this staff can handle that part of it, though. X’s and O’s are where I’m not as sure.

Bacot stayed at UNC because he isn’t an NBA player and can make money in. niL on campus than in pro ball. We can keep players like CJ Fair and Michael Gbinije with NIL money. Problem is our coaches since Hop left stopped getting good talent till Jim Boeheim was fired and Red was in charge. JJ starling wanted nothing to do with Jim Boeheim. Talented stopped coming when Mike Hopkins left. We had no athleticism but had plenty of chipwich parties.

It didn’t stop altogether: Tyus Battle Oshae Brissett Jalen Carey Quincy Guerrier Benny Williams Judah Mintz Those are all 4 and 5 star players (or the equivalent for the Canadians). Whether they were busts or not is beside the point. We also pulled in some of the top transfers during that time period.

Even after he committed to Michigan it was Hop who worked his dad on the phone. I think coming to Syracuse was a terrible decision for Battle. It was good for us. The kid didn’t develop much skills to help get him to the NBA and the zone didn’t help him. It’s also funny none of these guards were during Buddy’s time. Also Quincy left so we could get Jimmy Jr. Everyone on the team knew Jimmy Jr. was coming and it’s funny how Quincy Guerrier was a 3rd team all-ACC player who any smart program would have been patience with but Syracuse was fine with him leaving for the nba draft process because we knew we had Jimmy Jr. If we had NiL I think you are correct a kid like Battle could have stayed but Jim Boeheim wanted Buddy to play marathon minutes and Battle staying cuts into Buddy’s minutes. Jim Boeheim coaching his sons set this program back a lot.

Doesn’t matter how he did here. Doesn’t matter that QG left, or why. JB continued to bring in talent after Hop left. Dior Johnson was a commit as well. The drama surrounding him wasn’t JB’s fault and it sounds like it was JB’s decision to cut bait.

Jim Boeheim was more interested in coaching a team he liked than trying to fix the roster problems. Talent hasn’t been good enough. Since 2016 only 1 player has been drafted in the NBA draft and that is Elijah Hughes in the 2nd roun. When Syracuse was humming 10-12 years ago we went like 5 years in a row with a first round NBA draft pick. Talent has been a major problem. When Syracuse was good somebody like Buddy would have been the 3rd best player on the team. Talent has been a major problem. First year since Jim Boeheim got fired we got our highest recruit in 10 years. Hopefully Red continues upping the talent. Talent has been the biggest problem for basketball and football.

I think it’s generally been true that our best player would’ve been a number 2 or 3 guy on good Syracuse teams. We had that run of 1st rounders almost every year: Greene, Flynn, Johnson, Waiters, Melo, MCW, Ennis, McCullough….and then basically nothing since.
