Seems like a very good guy, quality individual. But… here’s the debate. I think he’s a backup, not a starter imo in the ACC. Yes he was a good defender in his conference but the level of competition was pretty low. Hofstra lost to every good team they played. He’s also a real small guy. Yes he averaged 7 assists a game but he had better shooters than SU has.
We also don’t have anyone else capable of playing point. JJ, Cuffe? Westry’s injury history means he can’t be counted on either.
I think we need another guard. I think Red is very foolish going all in with Carlos. It shows how little we have available for NIL. Always bargain hunting.

Whatever money we were using for Leffew is available but I'm guessing the honeypot is not very full.

I’m still holding out hope that Hawkins at Minnesota is a good comparison for Carlos. And Hawkins was able to make the leap from Howard to Minnesota and still be an effective player and solid starter. Hoping Carlos can do the same.

I watched as much film on Carlos as possible, including high school stuff. Apparently he was just starting to blow up in high school when Covid began. He was starting to get good offers, including UConn, and a few other bigger schools. Then he was forced to relocate and kinda got lost by recruiters. In one four game stretch in high school he averaged over 75 points a game. In an interview he stated he didn’t feel the need to go to name school because of guys like Curry that made it at smaller schools. He said the idea of being coached by Speedy Claxton was a selling point for Hofstra. But he was a big time scorer who didn’t really evolve his passing game until Hofstra and having more talent surrounding him. He sounds like a smart guy. Again, I’m cautiously optimistic. Hope he’s the steal of the portal. We need him to be.

However at the moment, I worry if he could be a guy we ask too much of and the flaws get exposed. Also, continue to see posts about how Cuffe can play PG, not just on Syracusefan but on one of those social media Orange fan accounts and in the comments. Seriously, just because the guy is 6’0 or so, doesn’t mean he’s a PG. He had 15 assists and 16 turnovers last year and played exclusively on the wing. I wouldn’t even call him a “combo guard” last year - he hardly ever handled the ball or dribbled. He was a wing who played off the ball exclusively. He played as much PG as Chris Bell. What are these people talking about?

What are these people talking about? I tend to agree. He’s being compared to Gillon… but may I remind everyone that team with Gillon and White could shoot, but played no defense, and didn’t make the tournament. As decent as Gillon was for us he had major flaws, just as Carlos will. I think he’s the PERFECT backup though. And totally agree about Cuffe. He showed nothing except spot up 3 point shooting which was mediocre. He certainly showed no signs of being capable of playing point

I’m not sure I see the Gillon comparisons. Gillon was a big time 3 point shooter. Shot a good % on high volume. Guy took over the Duke game in the second half with his scoring and had 43 against NC State - made nine 3’s I believe?
This kid doesn’t seem to be that type of shooter? Seems more like a true point who looks to distribute first and drive second, and can make an open 3 if left open.
Just my impression. Seems more Allen Griffin style to me?

In high school it was just the opposite. He was a pure scorer. He became a passer at Hofstra. I think it’s possible that he could play like Gillon if the team needed him to… assuming he can adjust to the higher caliber of play. It’ll be interesting to see how they use him.
