Also. We could have guys but in JB’s mind they aren’t long enough for the Zone or whatever. As Deano said above, some just don’t want to play all zone, regardless. The positionless basketball style is more and more appealing and prevalent these days. I always chuckled yet sighed when earlier in the season JB kept saying that some players were playing out of position and causing some of our woes. Shouldn’t be that big of a deal if we weren’t playing ball in the dinosaur ages!
JB is trying to be Tony Bennett, IMO. He is like the only coach he talks about in this loving/admiration/reverence manner. He loves watching Virginia he says often. I like watching them too, actually. The problem is Bennett gets WAY more fundamentally sound players. Better ballhandlers, passers, shooters. Workmanlike and effective bigs. I hope we keep trying to push the pace because we can’t pull off UVA’s efficiency and skill.

As for the zone... obviously it's effective when it's manned with the right personnel. It's not that I want us to abandon the zone. But if today's elite big men don't want to play zone, then we get stuck with guys like Chewy and Sidibe. It remains to be seen what JBA will become, but consider that we've actually recruited guys like Majur Majak, and Ossuniye. That's concerning. I'm not as high on Carrigan either since he's done zip in Juco.
There's not a whole lot left to recruit in 2019. I mentioned Bediako from Canada. He is beefier but not much offensive game. 7 footer Charles Coleman from Massachusetts reminds me of JBA and Majur Majak because he blocks shots and shoots 3's, but I'm not overwhelmed by the athleticism. Wish we could discuss the mystery center on the podcast.
Anyhow, if we want to play zone we have to be able to recruit the anchor of the zone. If JB and staff can't land a good center then we need to abandon the zone and/or hire a big man coach that is not a guard. Something has to give. Maybe a grad transfer is a possibility, but seriously though, we shouldn't be in this position.
Virginia is boring as shit... but they do win. Except for bowing out to us in the elite 8, and losing to a 16 seed. I think what JB likes about UVA is that they win without cheating.

UVA has scored a hundred this year, fwiw. I just think JB likes the slow down and grinders a la UVA. They pass it around for a purpose though, probe, and don’t just go eas-west. WAY better personnel there for THAT style. Who knows. I’m totally speculating re: JB/UVA. I do like them, though. Actually we might be more boring since we try to do the same shit these days but with unskilled cats, lol.
Has that stiff Majak committed somewhere? I hope he has because we better not have to re-recruit him and have him be like sloppy-sixths. Center position and trying to turn these combo/2s into PGs has been the major problem the past few years. Frank Howard even 100% is not a player who can lead this team beyond bubble material. He’s just not good enough, not fast enough, etc. I was really hoping he could’ve been off the ball more as a 2 but seems like nobody is capable of playing PG but him. Wish JB stuck with Carey longer today. Carey was supposed to be “the best offensive guard we have recruited...”
I haven’t subscribed to Dean’s pod in awhile. Is he high on recruiting currently? Any nuggets you can share without going into specifics? JB and the Zone appeal out there good or bad?

Ok Deano... when will we be able to speak about the center recruit on Dino's podcast? I'm dying to talk about it. Any word on whether the pursuit/interest may be made public? Let me ask the author of the podcast first. It's paid content and unlike some of the idiots on the other board I'm surprised someone over there hasn't posted it yet. Of course if they did the Mods would let it go.

Okay Jazz, I got permission from Dean to release the name of the possible center who caught his attention and it's Bernard Kouma. He's 6'10", 220, from Our Saviour Lutheran School in the Bronx. Under the radar right now but starting to turn heads. Hopefully Red or Griff get wind of this and start recruiting him. Here's a small clip that I found on Twitter -

Thanks for sharing the name here so we can finally talk about it. I've done some research on the guy, and I certainly have not watched him play hardly at all. I am happy we're looking at other options, but call me skeptical. The guy is unrated on all the major sites but one which lists him as a two star recruit.
I hope we offer because we need depth, but I'm so tired of these project/diamond in the rough guys, We should absolutely not be in the position to have to offer a guy that to my knowledge only Dayton, and a couple other mid major teams are in on.
That's not to knock Kouma. I read he recently had a 29pt 17tebound game against Rpselle Catholic. I think it's just years of pent up frustration that we're consistently looking at/bringing in centers that no other P5 team that's supposed to be a top 20 program would look twice at.
If they offer AND he comes I'll pull for him because I want all SU players to do well. But it just gets old as shit, and demoralizing. ' Convince me I'm wrong.

I don't think Dean would have mentioned him if he didn't think he was decent and he watched tape of the kid and came away impressed. That is good enough for me . Now the million dollar question is will our staff get involved.

The staff better do something that's for sure.

I saw a video clip of Kouma playing with Jimmy Boeheim. So the staff must have some familiarity with him? Wouldn't they have offered him already if they thought he could play?

Curious if Carrigan or Kouma remain options? Or maybe we have to wait because it's looking more and more likely that Oshae will be back. I think Tyus leaves no matter what. If they return, we don't have the scholarship to offer, right?

I don't think they are going to bother with anyone else IMHO. Wahab ain't coming here and Stewart is a long shot at this point the last I heard. I can't see OB going anywhere unless all of a sudden the last few months he gets his sh*t together. If he doesn't no one is going to draft him. I'm not sure on the scholarship limit. Agree Battle won't be back. If he doesn't get drafted in 1st round he should be a 2nd round pick and hope he can get on a team where he can make the team. PC I would assume isn't coming back based on his age. Frank will be gone too.

Disappointing to hear JB isn't pursuing anyone else besides JBA. That's asking an awful lot of him to be ready out of the gate, especially when there are still uncommitted centers. Maybe a grad transfer? Sidibe has health risks, and JBA is coming off an injury too, which had something to do with his ranking plummeting. Mind boggling that we wouldn't try for more depth.
As for Tyus, I agree. I'd be outright shocked if he returned.

They may still be going after someone after the season plus you don't know who will be out there as grad transfers (decent ones) that would help us immediately.
