First off, I'm of the opinion that Wildhack botched this whole thing by keeping JB longer than he should have, and not keeping Hop. That said, if we have JB for the next four years, these are my thoughts. The only way JB has a snowball's chance in hell of returning to the Final Four is to change recruiting strategies.
Recruit only 3 star caliber PROGRAM guys with IQ, who are coachable, and hardworking... Guys that you can sell to stay all four years. AND put tremendous focus and effort on strength and conditioning/player development unlike anything we've ever had. Sell them on being Championship contenders in 3 years.
We have that Buddy, and likely Braswell and JG3. Take the flier on Edwards (yes, I did just write that). Completely scratch the elite guys from the recruiting efforts so as to not waste time/energy. Offer the 3 star program guys EARLY, guys that would be pumped to receive an offer from Syracuse. We might suck for two/three years, but maybe that last year we'll have an experienced team that is cohesive and on a mission. We just aren't going to get the elite guys until JB retires... but maybe just maybe... it might be painful, and it may not work... but it's the only plan I see that gives JB a fighting chance.
Thoughts?

I don't think it's as dire as this makes it out to be. A recruiting class of Guerrier, Goodine, JBA, and Girard is pretty good. Obviously we struck out on a lot of the big men that we went after, but we still got a bunch of talented guys. I don't think we need to purposefully focus on taking worse players.
I think a blend of four-year types and guys like Guerrier/Goodine (and hopefully higher rated guys in the future again) is the ideal blend and I don't really see why that can't still be the objective now.
I think the offensive system (and if it's severely impacting recruiting, the defensive system) are much larger issues than our current recruiting methods. We've been able to recruit fairly highly rated guys and have gotten a decent number of them to stay more than a year. We just haven't been able to build a good offense with them.

I respectfully disagree. While I do like some of the guys in the 2019 class, I do believe our recruiting is down and has been for a while now. We can't seem to recruit a point guard or a center to save our life. To think we can recruit at the same pace as we did say ten years ago is very shortsighted IMO. Some change in recruiting strategy is absolutely required when the head coach has only a few years remaining. I guess it all depends on one's perception of the state of the program. I think we're a sinking ship, if things remain status quo. I'm embarrassed by the style and quality of play the last couple of years. Clearly you have more confidence than I do. I'd prefer to be wrong. Time will tell. I don't think we'll see a top 20 ranked class again while JB is still the coach. I think we'll be an NIT team next year, and recruiting will only get harder, not easier.

Iâm optimstic that the incoming recruits have diverse enough skills and athleticism (BALLHANDLING first and foremost, IMO) offensively. Still, those guys arenât âeliteâ prospects for a reason. Not saying they wonât be very good but we need to them to ready pretty much right away and/or Carey to make a complete transformation. That was an epic disaster. If OB leaves we need Quincy Q to be able to hang on the boards and provide some offense. Heâs more of a CJ Fair-type and not as explosive as I originally thought. Again, nothing wrong with that but he needs to be ready to ball immediately if OB leaves. Rebounding could be a real bloodbath if we canât get some meat down low, Sidibe stays sore/lost/leaves, and if QG isnât ready. I love Marek but for him to be playing major minutes at the 5 is an indictment of how this program has regressed. He has no business being there and it isnât fair to the kid. I pray that he wonât have to play there for the third consecutive season. We donât have anything close to resembling all these tourney teams from the round of 32 on. Most of these teams have MUCH better ballhandling, speed, physicality down low, etc. Many collectively with lower rated talent. Our Zone gets us some default wins throughout the season (and in the Tourney last season) due to confusion and steams stagnating. We do JUST enough on offense where often the method to which a good/open look is generated is like a root canal or chinese fire drill. Fine I guess. But, you take even Oregon, Houston, Purdue, Auburn, Mich St last year, I dare say Wofford/Belmont, etc...play them 10 times and we get beat easily 8X out of 10, IMO. The system both on O and D is a detriment currently. Thatâs my belief albeit there is no way for me to factually back it up. I just donât think our guys want to stay in this system and bolt if they can. That or certain players not wanting to play out of position for another season or what not. I can only imagine all the various negative recruiting in regards to our systems. Again, no way to prove it. Really concerned for next season. Lots of ifs. If the youngsters arenât quite ready and weâre having to run the offense through Elijah Hughes for hero ball then this WILL be Boeheimâs worst season and Wildhack probably will need to do something. Hughes isnât an all-ACC player and shouldnât be a 38 MPG type player regardless, IMO.

I'm definitely not advocating passing on elite guys that TRULY want to play for Syracuse. But I think we should spend the focus of our time on recruiting attainable guys, as opposed to guys who like drama and stringing along programs because it's cool to have Final Six lists etc. I've seen us time and time again put tons of time and energy into guys that we end up whiffing on and then we're stuck recruiting the scraps. I will wager that we do not land any of the top 100 recruits we've offered in 2020, with the possible exception of Andre Jackson, who despite his talent is not a position of need like point guard and center are. We should be involved with other more attainable guys EARLIER so we have a chance with them. I'm tired of hearing we can't pursue someone late because we have no relationship with the player. We just can't operate that way anymore. Time is running out for JB. I, like all fans, want to watch him win, as opposed to going out limping. To think our recruiting will not be impacted by having the oldest D1 coach who may or may not last the duration of his remaining contract is IMO naive. I think there are strategies we can utilize to give us a fighting chance to compete. But recruiting like nothing is going on, is IMO putting our heads in the sand.
