Brown - 23 Copeland - 20.1 Mintz - 19.2 Starling - 16.1 Bell -15.3 Cuffe - 5.9 Taylor - 5.6
That’s just an insane drop off after the top 5.
Benny was 15.0 and McCleod was 15.7(which is not very good for a center, but still).
Starling has turned a corner in ACC play, and I’m starting to hope Bell has too. Basically we need both of them shooting it well to beat teams, because there’s no other options. Taylor’s regression has been a shocking disappointment. He was better than this, last year.

Help a stat noob like me out. What exactly is PER? “Player efficiency rating”….basically it attempts to measure how productive and efficient a player is during their time on the court. It basically takes into account all of the positive and negative stats a player has while they’re in the game. For the most part, bigs on average will have higher PERs than guards because they miss fewer shots and turn it over less. So you kinda have to compare guys in similar roles and positions to each other.

Those numbers for a couple guys went up a lot last night. JJ was around 13 before the game. Mintz was at 15.

When Bell shoots I’m confident it’s going in, don’t get that feeling a lot, Swider, then before him White. It seems like Red is really in his ass about defense, I’m slowly turning into a Bell guy.

Going to need him to have a nice comeback game against Clemson Yup. Good sign that Bell has been playing well pretty consistently, and is starting to rebound better and even make some big defensive plays. Good sign that Taylor has become a contributor lately….largely abandoning the outside shots but getting some hoops cutting to the basket. Cuffe has had some good stretches lately. Thats 3 guys playing way better than they were a month ago. Actually, 4. Mintz has overall been playing really well lately. But Starling has definitely slipped a bit, lately. He was bad yesterday.

He had a solid stretch for a bit, but Starling is still not where we need him to be. The only starting guard with a worse PER than him for Syracuse since it started being tracked in 2009 was Frank Howard during his senior season.

I’m excited to see how he does with another offseason to work on his game

Starting to not believe what we see is what he is, has has far too much to improve to be serviceable at those things. We have two years of a guy who plays defense worse than I’ve ever seen and can’t even dribble with his left hand left alone go left. Expecting anything from him resembling a top guard is a huge mistake. I hope I’m wrong but just don’t see it with him at all.

The only well rounded players on the team are Copeland and Brown. Now they have holes too, but at least they both do many things well on both offense and defense.
At this point, those are the only “Syracuse level” starters we have IMO.
Starling has flashed big time potential as a scorer…..but nothing else. In the past, a guy like that comes off the bench at Syracuse until he improves his weaknesses and eventually his time comes. He could get there - he is athletic enough to defend.
Bell flat out can’t play defense in too many situations, and sucks at rebounding. Not a starter until he fixes it.
We continue to need more guys that are good at more things. Hopefully Freeman comes in as one of those guys and we’ll have 3 of them. Maybe 4 if Starling gets there as a Junior.
4 would be better than 0, which is where we were in the losing season full of guys who were good at one thing and terrible at everything else.
